DOCTOR X.
1932. Black & White version (NOT the Technicolor version that is widely available).
A must have for TRUE COLLECTORS. The completely alternatively shot B&W version. EVERY scene was shot independently from the Technicolor version. Another rare classic to add to your HORROR DVD collection!
Doctor X is a First National/Warner Bros. horror and mystery film from 1932. It was directed by Michael Curtiz and stars Lee Tracy, Fay Wray, and Lionel Atwill. The film is notable for having been shot in Technicolor and being produced before the motion picture Production Code. Thus, adult themes such as murder, rape, cannibalism, and prostitution are interwoven into the story.
Doctor X served a dual purpose for Warner Bros. to fulfil their contract with Technicolor. In 1931, after the release on The Runaround, a film photographed in an improved process of Technicolor which removed the grain and resulted in a more vibrant and realistic color, the Warner Bros. signed up with Technicolor to shoot six feature films in the new process. After the poor reception of Manhattan Parade (1932), Warner Bros. attempted to get out of their contract for the remaining five features. When Technicolor introduced yet another improved process (three-color), this only further convinced Warner Bros. that they had made a mistake. An agreement was reached with Technicolor whereby the Warner Bros. would produce two more features in the two-color process.
During production, this alternate black and white version was shot (much to Technicolor's chagrin) with separate cameras, different takes, speeds, angles and dialogue lines - and this film is now much harder to find than the color version.
DVD is NTSC format, Region 0 (region free) and playable world wide.
