This publication, released by Marvel Comics back in 2006, compiles all 24 issues of the 1977-1979 series Godzilla King of the Monsters. The fact that this book was released at all is somewhat of a modern miracle, although the agreement with Toho clearly stipulated a decent exchange of money, since it retails for more than any other release in the Essential line. The markup isn't too bad, though, since it roughly equates to $2-$3 more than its counterparts.
Now in regards to the series this book compiles, it's a fun romp. Similar to the Godzilla movies of the early 1970's, these aren't too serious in terms of their outlook, although the title character does maintain a level of menace through out. Sadly, the original creations that Marvel came up with for the character to fight are extremely uninspired, as are their names such as Yetrigar. Thankfully, as the titular character reaches New York he gets a chance to throw down with a fair number of Marvel's more popular characters and establishments, including the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, SHIELD and a guest appearance by Spider-man. Overall, it's a fun read, and unlike a lot of other properties, is somewhat unique for having its slightly cheesy allure to it while still keeping Godzilla as a worthy antagonist.
